if you cant create a good simple low maintenance design. like if you cant make your design concept work with minimal detail. then you sure wont be able to create a good complex super intricate one. you will get bogged down with wrinkles and accessories and extra bits and details and your design will drown under a pile of bonus features that dont define the character or creature.

the n64 and ps1 encouraged good design by limiting the amount of polygons you could put into your main character. it came down to appealing shapes and simple clear design accents. some people forget how important these things are.

be careful guys. remember colour silhouette negative space and appeal. remember open interesting unique shapes. try things you havent tried before and experiment with concepts.

try converting abstract shapes to designs. try teaching yourself about colour theory and colour temperature. try practicing using negative space and using shapes to direct the eye.

dont just draw your idea the first way that pops into your head and leave it there. unless you have a lot of practice with thinking designways already chances are youll be falling back on a cliche template or remembered design in your head which will mess up your design a lot.

once you have a solid design THEN you can detail it. before that? no
