hahah man I forgot about those guys! they were cool. :< I miss those guys.
No I wasn't thinking about the hyudoros, I was just remembering how the ghosts in pumpkin hill at sunset weren't present in the same mountains during the day (sky rail). Also because the way to defeat king boom boo was to chase him into hiding by shedding daylight on him. The stuff about not damaging plants and not approaching gravestones comes from the other ways boom boos surprise you in pumpkin hill, and from the pulsing, leering pumpkins and trees around the place.
I imagine them just kind of… lighting up at sunset, supernaturally. There are dozens, if not hundreds of pumpkins out in the middle of no-where, why would they be lit up during the night and not during the day? Who would light them?
Also I figure they formed naturally, but the supernatural atmosphere and occult saturation of the place sort of… warped their formation. There are things like the pumpkin rocks though in real life, they're called hoodoos, and they are 100% natural.
I think we're both right. Especially Hoodoos that maybe either carved into the shape of pumpkins or maybe supernatually became that way.
The reason why candles is because candles are lit to honour the dead and also since these are giant rock jack-o-lanterns, a candle is what you expect to find, so I imagine these jack-o-lanterns carved hollow and filled with lots of candles that at the late hours they give off an eerie glow.
Of course it be impossible for anyone to light them all before nightfall. Knuckles, Rouge and perhaps others with simular climbing skills wouldn't be able to acomplish that task. So they must really light up by themselves supernatually and go out at morning.
Holy crap, this is gorgeous. Pumpkin Hill has to be one of my all time favorite SA2 stages and this is an absolutely gorgeous rendition that manages to rekindle that feeling I had when I was little where I was convinced wandering too far into the stage would result in me getting jumped by armies of zombies or something like that. I particularly like the design on the 'DANGER' sign.
The amazing thing about this is its portrayal of a part of Sonic's world without any Sonic characters actually present in the picture, and they totally aren't needed. This is absolutely stunning, the setting speaks for itself, and looks almost like a photograph. You did an amazing job!
